Chris's Crocodiles!
In numeracy we have been doing a lot of work on our mental maths – spending time every day to learn: odds and evens, place value, addition facts, number bonds, doubles, near doubles, adding and subtracting 10, 9 and 11, positive and negative numbers, ordering amounts, converting between pounds and pence, multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000, working on our times tables and division facts, squared and cubed numbers, square roots, prime and composite numbers, etc.
A little while ago we also thought about greater than, less than or equal to with the help of a special visitor – ‘Chris the Crocodile’. Chris is extremely greedy and always has his jaws open towards the bigger amount. When comparing negative numbers (e.g. -£5 or -£50) it was helpful to think of Chris owing the bank money – would he rather pay £5 or £50?
This Australian reptile is full of energy but has a foul temper, especially when we mentioned ‘Bodger the Badger’ - his sworn enemy! As we explored their relationship (which involved some nasty words and even Chris’s jealousy resulting in a vicious attack on Mr. Fulton’s neck!) we thought about Problem Solving.
Problem Solving is not just in maths – it’s a life skill!
Chris (and Bodger) have had to learn the 11 Steps to Problem Solving – with the help of the P.7 Paths programme. We set a goal, helped them think of possible solutions, tried them out and kept at it until they were able to sit down (metaphorically, they are hand puppets after all!) and talk it out. The root problem was really jealously – each one envying the talents of the other. Instead of pulling against each other they now try to work with each other – learning to pay compliments... and ‘holding their tongue’ if a nasty thought comes to mind.
